Today (October 10, 2005 ) we take care of 62 donkeys. Each
donkey costs approximately Afls 125 a month to care for (food and
medical
costs). This comes to Afls. 1500 ($860.-)per year. This amount is
often too much for people so we have reduced the fee for adoption to
Afls 25 ($15.-)per month or Afls 300 ($180.-)per year. Therefore each donkey is
allowed to have four adopted parents (individual or family) to make up
the Afls 100 ($60.-)per month. The donkeys are very lucky to be able to
have four loving adoptive parents.
We work with volunteers only and don't get any support
from our government. In case your school or company would like to adopt a donkey, you can
do this for a period of one year and you can choose your own donkey. They are available in
all sorts and sizes.
If you adopt a
new-born donkey, you can give it a name; all other animals already have their own names,
some of which are really appropriate such as: One eye or Crooked ear. Sometimes they are
named after a celebrity like: Brad Pitt

| A picture of the
donkey and of you or the logo of your company will be placed on this page of the website
for the time you adopt the donkey.

to meet her donkey in 2008! |
A better picture of Marta with
Sonic.
|
| Marta
Russel and Richard Balzarini
from Stone Ridge, New
York paid several visits to the sanctuary. They have
a flock of sheep and they are trying to decide whether to get llamas
or donkeys to protect their flock. Donkeys are known to be good
shepherds. They chose to adopt Sonic.
They also decided to get a present for Marta's sister,
Kathleen Broderick who
lives in Ohio and chose Picasso.

Odilia Boelens, the mother of one of
our former volunteers, Francesca, decided to adopt Negrita.
She had adopted Negrita's mother before. Negrita will be a year
old at the end of May 2006. Francesca's daughter is a memeber of
our youth club and Francesca is still helping the Sanctuary by doing
research for us on the donkeys in
Aruba.

American
Airlines, team Aruba, has decided this year to participate
in the "adopt a donkey" program. The donkeys used to
take our people from one place to other and also to their jobs that
were very far. The donkey foundation consists of volunteers who depend
on donations to feed, care, keep the place clean so that the donkeys
can feel at ease, and give them water to drink.
American Airlines chose Sky
which is very appropriate for an airline company. They came out
on October 4th, 2007 which was animal day and world donkey day,
to see their adoptee.

John &
Noa Williams-Hall from Massachusetts came to visit his sister, who
happens to be a volunteer at the Sanctuary. Noa came with
Debbie to help out on the day she works at the Sanctuary. Of
course, Noa fell in love
with the donkeys and had to adopt one. She picked Chippie.
Chippie at one time was the leader of the group but gave up the job so
Chocolate could take over.

The
Blakes
are from
Florida
and visited the Sanctuary.
Unfortunately
it was closed when they came, but they stood outside the gate and visited
with the donkeys.
Sally
and Steve adopted Pica
and Brian
adopted QT.
They
must be real animal lovers.
It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of Pica on Friday, October 26,
2007. Pica was having his hooves trimmed and apparently he
became scared and jumped up. When he landed he broke
his front right leg (the one that had been broken before). The vet was
called and came to the Sanctuary. Unfortunately there was nothing
he could do as the bone was through the skin and it was his
bad leg so he was put down.

Toos Eldering, the aunt of the
Foundation's Vice President, sent money from the Netherlands to adopt
a donkey. She is an animal lover and rescued many birds in
Holland. She chose Fifi, who lives in Seroe
Alejandro, a 30 year old donkey who had been severely abused.
Fifi no longer trusts people and can only be touched on her rear end
but then walks away. The adoption is renewed till 2007

Dan
and Heather Kennedy
from Florida
visited the sanctuary and were very enthusiastic about the work we do.
They had a hard time picking a donkey to adopt so decided they would
each adopt one donkey for six months. Heather chose One
Eye who is our baby Negrita's mom. One Eye is a very
good mom and also has a son Boem Boem at the sanctuary. Dan
chose Kromoor,
also known as Crooked Ear because his ear is crooked. He was in
a fight with another donkey and when then doctor fixed his ear is
became crooked.

Dale, Margery &
Andrew Mikey
|
A couple f rom New Hampshire USA, Dale and
Margery Young, spent a lot of time at the sanctuary. They were
interested in all the donkeys. When Andrew came to cuddle
with them, that was it. They could not resist him
and adopted him for a year. They enjoyed their visit to the
Sanctuary so much that next year (november 2005) when they return to
Aruba they plan to volunteer for a day. Wouldn't it be nice if
all adoptive parents volunteered? This adoption continues till 2007.
Since January 2007 Margery & Dale also adopted Mikey, named
after Margery's late brother. |
| Last
week our Vice President received a call that there was a baby donkey
abandoned in one of the roois (river bed). Off went Desiree to
pick him up in Cashero in her trusty Explorer and took him to her
house. He is approximately one week old and is learning to drink
his milk from a bottle. He sleeps in Desiree's bedroom where he
can be dry and warm. Desiree's father, on vacation from the
Nederlands, took one look at the baby and fell in love.
John
& Miel Eldering- Paauw have adopted him and named in Mon
Petit. Love of animals seems to run in Desiree's family as
one of her aunts recently also adopted one of our donkeys.

As the very
first KLM plane that landed on Aruba back in 1934 was named Snip,
KLM Caribbean Area wanted to name their adopted donkey after
this aircraft. Danilo de Freytas (KLM ARUBA) and Arianne Staal (KLM
CURAÇAO) came to the sanctuary to make a picture. Helen (Volunteer)
had to hold Snip. He was more interested in his food than in glamour
pictures. www.klm.com

Lori &
Christie Clafardoni-Hawkes were on their 6th visit to Aruba and
made their way to the sanctuary. They live in Massachusetts and cannot
have a donkey as their house is too small so decided to adopt Chocolate
and they can visit him every time they are in Aruba.

Luc and
Conny Peek visited the Sanctuary and decided to adopt Lucky.
They
really liked her name. Lucky used to live at our Bringamosa
sanctuary but she found a hole in the fence and decided to come and
live in Sta Lucia again. She adopted Bambi and takes good care of him.
Adoption March 1, 2008 - 2009

Bliksem,
one of our recently rescued donkeys, is very fortunate to have
adoptive parents
Tim Hinds and Michele Ashby. These lovely people adopt
animals wherever they travel. So far they have adopted a
gorilla, a buffalo, a sea turtle and 3 pigs. Bliksem came to us
with two very bad wounds on his neck. He is doing very well and
one of the wounds has already healed.
