Thomas Reinhart from Florida came to the sanctuary in early October and talked to Pedro, one of our volunteers. Tom had a great time talking to Pedro and decided to adopt a donkey.  He was looking for one in need and so Pica was chosen. Pica is about 25 years old and several years ago was hit by a car.  Two of his legs were broken, but he never lay down so he did not die.  Pica's legs cannot be straightened so he stays in a separate corral where he is safe.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pica on Friday, October 26, 2007.  Pica was having his hooves trimmed and apparently he became scared and jumped up.  When he landed he broke his front right leg (the one that had been broken before).  The vet was called and came to the Sanctuary.  Unfortunately there was nothing he could do as the bone was through the skin and it was his bad leg so he was put down.

adoption period October 3, 2005 - 2006

Tio Mexico calls the sanctuary his home from February 2004. He was spotted in the company of a stallion who had been severely injured and who is walking on two legs only, using one of his hind legs as a stilt (this donkey we could catch on May 1st, 2005 His name is Bally). We were only able to catch Tio Mexico, though. Tio has probably suffered a stroke: the right side of his face is paralysed.

Tio was adopted by Carol and Ed Clifford from Belmont NH, USA. They are frequent and enthusiastic visitors. After they adopted Pica, Ed received Tio Mexico as his Father’s Day present. Wow!

Chocolat has been adopted by sisters Patricia and Mary Jo Gardecki. They  visited the sanctuary many times bringing a lot of carrots and apples for the donkeys.  Chocolat is a dark brown and is the head donkey at the  sanctuary.

October 12, 2005 - 2007 the adoption is to be continued. Thank you!

Karin van der Linden & Marja Kik, who is a veterinarian, came to Aruba to visit Marja’s sister Jacqueline Boderie.  Jacqueline is one of our volunteers.  In order to spend  more time with her sister, Marja came to the sanctuary every Friday with  Jacqueline. Marja purchased many items from our shop and then decided to
adopt one of our donkeys.  She picked Esmeralda as she has not been adopted by anyone.

October 14, 2005 – 2007

the adoption is to be continued. Thank you!

Once again the Sanctuary was very fortunate to have three trainees from Holland help out at the Sanctuary while they worked on a project.  Vivian, Sharon & Ingrid were very hard working and really enjoyed all the animals.  Just before they left we received a call about two injured donkeys which we brought to the Sanctuary.  In honor of the three girls they named one of the donkeys Vishin which is the first two letters of each of the girls names. Pronounce as Vision (he has a bad eye) We hope they will enjoy their adoption of this new donkey.

Adoption April 16, 2008 - 2009

On November 5, 2005, Eran Swartz will have his Bar Mitzvah.  As part of  his Bar Mitzvah project, which is learning to give or do something special
for others, Eran has decided to adopt one of our donkeys.  He has come to  Aruba four times and seen many of our wild donkeys.  Eran has picked  Blackie, a young donkey also becoming an adult.  Blackie broke his leg  last February, is still recovering after spending several months at the  veterinarians.

November 5, 2005 - 2006

Cathy Vaughn, from the U.S. came to the Sanctuary.  She and her husband  have miniature donkeys at home and   wanted to do something for our donkeys.  They could not make up their mind and went through the volunteer book which has pictures and stories of our donkeys.  She chose Negrita because she is young and very friendly.
October 29, 2005 - 2007 the adoption is to be continued. Thank you!
The Czaplickis from Malaga in Spain found us on the web and when they came to Aruba stopped at the Sanctuary.
As a Valentine's gift they decided to adopt a donkey. Unfortunately both Bastiaan and Kleintje do not live at Sta. Lucia so they chose our new baby, Sunday.

People from all over the world love our donkeys.

April 9, 2008

Jean Humphrey recently bought a six-month sponsorship of Negrita for her sister-in-law Debbie Wegener of Moline, Illinois.  But Negrita would not co-operate to have her picture taken.  Here is a picture of Jean with Negrita's look-alike, Blackie.
